The School

The school

The Ituna Community School is a primary school serving 450 orphaned & vulnerable children in a township called Racecourse, on the outskirts of Kitwe, Zambia. The school was set up by the local community to provide education for children who cannot afford to attend state school.

Teachers

The Teachers

The Teachers are volunteers from the local community who have worked hard to establish the school over the past decade. Our support enables the ten teachers to be paid an allowance of £30 per month. Over time we would like to increase this to allow teacher to have a full wage of around £250 per month.

Feeding Programme

Each child receives a free cup of fortified porridge at lunch that is cooked by the parents of the school children. This balanced meal once a day makes a big difference to the health of the children.Another benefit of this feeding programme is that parents are more likely to encourage their children to attend school. There are many willing hands happy to help clean up after lunchtime and perhaps find some extra at the bottom of a cooking pot!

Monthly Support

We currently support the school by sending £550 per month. This provides an allowance for the staff, and pays for utility bills, books and equipment. In the future we aim to increase the monthly support to enable the continued development of the school.

Teacher training

We are committed to not only the education of the children, but also improving the skills of the volunteers to become teachers, some of whom have not even completed their own eduction. We have a programme where at any one time a number of teachers are studying for distance learning qualifications with a national teacher training college. It costs £2000 to fully train a teacher (over three years)

Secondary school

Secondary School

Children who pass their grade 7 exam at the end of their time at Ituna are eligible to continue education at a secondary school. Very few of the children have parents can afford secondary school fees. We partner with a number of other groups to sponsor children to grade 8 and above. We sponsor any capable children left without support, so no child passing grade 7 is left without this opportunity.

Building Report

Building report

The first phase of the school is now fully occupied. It includes four classrooms, two offices and a toilet block at each end. The design of the school has been carefully thought through in partnership with the teachers. It takes into account the local climate, needs of the children and security.The school is constructed from hydroform blocks, which are made from the local soil mixed with a little cement. This enabled the blocks to be made on site and used far less energy than concrete blocks.The school was built by the local community, see: Community Involvement

Community Involvement

One of the key aims that runs through all our involvement with the school is the desire to work with the local community. They are the very best experts in what they need, and what will or will not work. Every effort has been made to involve the community from the very beginning and throughout the building process. Members of the community were consulted about the location and design of the school, and then employed during its construction.By working with the local community two things have occurred, firstly we have watched them take on a sense of ownership and a desire to look after the building and secondly employing locally has meant that the wider community has benefited as well as the children.

Future Phases

In the future we intend to install sanitaryware and connect the toilet blocks to the main sewer. This will introduce waterborne sanitation to the school for the first time. This will cost £12,000 - £13,000. They are currently using pit latrines.Phase 2a and 2b each consist of an additional 2 classrooms, costing about £12,000 per classroom. Phase 3 is made up of a hall (which can be sub-divided into two classrooms), a kitchen, a library, two store rooms and staff room. This will cost in the region of £55,000.

Our Stories

Boy David

Boy David...

Increasingly facts and figures are becoming important to demonstrate the impact that any intervention makes on the outcome. Sometimes a simple picture paints a thousand words. The photos are both of the same boy, David, one of the many orphans at the school. The picture (left) we took in 2005 during our first visit.You may recognise him as we have used his picture on a lot of our materials since then. We were struck in 2005 by how many children were hungry for food, but just as hungry to learn and gain an education. The other picture (right) was taken during our August 2011 visit. David is thriving physically and still working hard at his studies, or so his teachers tell us! This is just one of the many children whose future looks brighter because of the work of the Ituna Community Project and all its supporters. Thank you! from David.

Agness Mkandawire

Agness is a thirteen year old orphan who attends the Ituna Community School. She is looked after by Mwiya Butte a friend in the local community. Agness eats once a day at school where a hot meal is provided for her.At school Agness's favourite subjects are scripture union and red cross. When she is older she hopes to become a doctor.With the help of the Ituna Community Project, Agness will be able to attend secondary school, something that before she could only dream of.

Thanks to the generosity of Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday Football Clubs, the Ituna Community School have two full football kits. In August 2011 the first Zambian Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday match took place at the school, the final score was 1 -1.

The Ituna Community Project is a UK based charity founded in 2006 to work in partnership with the Racecourse community in Kitwe, Zambia. We work with a locally elected committee called the ICOVCC (Ituna Community Orphans and Vulnerable Childrens Committee), who run the Ituna Community School and other projects. Our aim is to see a self sustaining facility supported by local enterprises.

Our vision

Our mission statement continues to focus our actions:- "To empower Ituna Community School, Kitwe, Zambia, to develop a self-sustaining educational facility which positively impacts the future lives of the children and wider community."Ultimately we seek to make the school self sustaining through local income generating activities initially funded through the charity or facilitated through the use of the school building out of school time.We aim to move towards this by training the school governors and teachers in administrative and management practice, and encouraging them to create working business plans.

Why

In 2005 a group of students visited Kitwe, Zambia with a christian group called The Navigators and spent some of their time helping at the Ituna Community School. Some of this group were moved by what they saw and set up a charity on their return to support the work of those running the school. In 2006 the charity was formally registered and continues to grow as we attract more supporters.

How

We work closely with a locally elected committee called the ICOVCC (Ituna Community Orphans and Vulnerable Childrens Committee), who run the school and other projects supported by the charity. They, as representatives of the community, make decisions about priorities and appoint individuals to take on all the day to day running of projects. We help with the provision of funds, and occasional technical advice.Our work is funded by a wide range of supporters including schools, churches, trust funds and other groups. We also have individuals giving both regularly and one off gifts.

Donations come from various sources - individuals and groups and can't all be named. You know who you are - thank you!Year 7 at Wisewood School held a coffee morning and raised £ 37.Big Challenge Group at Bradfield School raised £42.40 and the school held a non uniform day and raised £360Ranby House School raised £422 by selling craft items at christmas.Marr Munning Trust pledged to give £200 every quarter from March 2009 for 3years.Oughtibridge Wesleyan Reform Chapel are heavily involved in supporting, fundraising and donating. Three members visited the school in August 2011.Football kits were donated by Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United for our trip in August 2011. The children had great fun playing against each other and will continue to do so.

Our trustees are responsible for managing the charity and ensuring funds are used wisely. They have all visited the school and give their time for free.
