The design for the new school was developed while working closely with the staff and pupils at the school, and while similar in many ways to other schools in the area has a few key differences. The most significant of these are the courtyard layout, the hall design, which was inspired by a traditional form of meeting place called an insaka and the use of Hyrdaform blocks for the walls instead of concrete. These blocks are made of compressed earth and a small amount of cement, making them as strong as concrete blocks, but much cheaper and more environmentally sustainable. This overall design has been broken down into phases so that a basic building with all the essentials can be up and running as soon as possible. Phase one includes four classrooms, two offices and the toilets. Phases two a and b, the shorter wings have a further two classrooms in each and then the final phase contains a library, kitchen, the hall (which can be divided to give two further classrooms) and additional offices and store rooms. The building work is being done in two ways. Simple works, such as clearing the land, is being organised by the school and mostly being done by parents for very small benefit. More complex works, like bricklaying, are handled by local contractors whose contract states they must employ labourers from the area the school is in. All the work is overseen by a local architect who has kindly agreed to work for a reduced fee to ensure a good level of workmanship.
