The Ituna Community School is situated in the Racecourse community on the edges of Kitwe. It was set up in 1999 by the local community for their own orphaned and vulnerable children in response to the growing need to provide education for these children. The community currently rents a run down old bar that is shared with other businesses and people. It has no running water, electricity or proper sanitation. The roof is full of holes. There are 800 children on the school role, although some rarely attend as they are either too weak from hunger, or working to support their families. Teaching at Ituna was done by unpaid volunteers supervised by a government official named Mr Mweemba, who looks after this and two other similar schools. At the moment classes at the school work in three shifts in order to accommodate all the children with the limited resources available, sharing some of the classrooms with carpenters. This unusual arrangement is to help pay the rent on the rather dilapidated building the school is based in. Despite this, and the limited equipment, the teachers are keen to develop the school and the children keen to learn, knowing a good education gives the best chance of escaping poverty. Initially we looked at purchasing and repairing this building. However, the current owners don’t want to sell and the land is not officially registered. This would make any purchasing agreement vulnerable.
