Education Vs Food

Psychologist Abram Maslow in his 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation described what he called the 'hierarchy of needs’. He saw our basic physiological needs (food, water, air) as the starting point for human personal growth and development. When there is a deficiency in one of our basic needs, he thought that our various other needs love, self esteem, sense of belonging, even morality - would be neglected until our basic needs were being met. When you are starving what consumes your thoughts, worries, and priorities? To us in the West we perhaps consider Education as vital and a non-negotiable need. To deny a child an education is a form of abuse. Does that hold true in a situation where a basic scramble for survival exists? Where a daily struggle to feed yourself and your family exists? How would that change our daily actions and priorities? Why worry about tomorrow, when today has enough troubles of its own?
