The Project
The vision for the project started in 2005 following a three week visit to a school for orphaned and vulnerable children in Kitwe, Zambia. The initial team was composed of students and young graduates from the Sheffield branch of an international Christian organisation called the Navigators. Five of those on this trip, and one other person became the founding trustees of the charity and continue to run the project. The Ituna Community Project was registered as a UK based charity in July 2006 to work in partnership with the Racecourse community in Kitwe Zambia. Our mission statement continues to focus our actions:- "To empower Ituna Community School, Kitwe, Zambia, to develop a self-sustaining educational facility which positively impacts the future lives of the children and wider community." As a charity we seek to empower the community to develop and run their school through a locally elected committee called the ICOVCC (Ituna Community Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Committee). The school is registered in Zambia as a community school. Thus the local Education Authority undertakes regular monitoring and inspection of the school, although when it comes to funding and resources they are very much left to their own efforts. We avoid telling the community how to run their school, while ensuring they are accountable for their decisions. Together with the ICOVCC we develop strategy and planning decisions for the school. Through this dialogue we seek to avoid a donor mentality developing within the ICOVCC and local community. Ultimately we seek to make our charity redundant with the school and project locally self-sustaining through local income generating activities.
