Tendering the Superstructure
With the completion of the concrete ground slab, with the exception of the veranda area to be laid at the end of the rain season; the first physical element of the new school has been established. Currently as more of a symbol of commitment to the people of the racecourse community, we have the foundation ready for the superstructure which we intend to erect from March onwards. The slab was our first chance to see how well our construction team could perform. It consisted of our own Matthew Jones who has kept a very keen eye on design and material specification and worked closely with our architect in Zambia, Charles Chifunda. After a careful tender and selection process we agreed on a contract sum with a local contractor specifying that community members were used as labour where possible. The team proved successful with the slab being completed in budget and to a high quality, we now have our sights firmly set on developing the superstructure. Each of the elements will be split into contractor packages’ steel firms tendering for the frame, brick fabricators and layers tendering for the cladding and so on. The project will be coordinated, and quality checked by Charles Chifunda, and the tender submissions investigated by our construction team in the UK to ensure best value. The ICP are confident that at the end of the year we will have a completed building to hand over to the teachers pupils and governors of the Ituna School.
