This makes them both affordable and sustainable, both socially and environmentally, as their production creates jobs locally and uses a fraction of the energy in production as concrete blocks. £20 - 1 steel window for a classroom Steel window frames are ideal for the Zambian climate where they do not rust and can be made by local craftsmen. A tall thin shape both keeps the building secure and moderates the amount of direct sun entering the room. This in turn helps keep classrooms cool when temperatures outside reach 40 degrees Celsius. £50 - An external classroom door Hardwood doors are made from timber felled in the local region and are a durable long lasting product. The doors will be made by local carpenters, one of the largest industries near the school. Many of these carpenters send their children to the Ituna Community School, and are a key part of both the local economy and the support network for the school.
