While bricks and mortar are important, they are not the only focus of our Charity. A good school is all about people growing and developing to their full potential. Last year 27 children at the school progressed sufficiently in their studies to pass the state entrance exam for secondary schools. 8 of them were going to be prevented from progressing with their education as they were orphans or their parent(s) to poor to afford the modest fees (around £50/yr/child). As part of our philosophy for supporting the school, we have encouraged the School Committee to make the critical decisions regarding resource allocation. The £300 we send over each month is spent according to the priorities set by the Committee. This has included a small teacher’s allowance, as well as enabling some of them to be enrolled on a teacher training course. The Committee decided to use some of the money we send to sponsor 8 of the best and poorest children to continue their education at a local secondary school. As Trustees we are delighted they have chosen to do this, and look forward to hearing more about the progress of these children as their education continues, and futures brighten. The school has a system of assessing a child's vulnerability. When a child applies to come to the school, teachers visit the home and use a scoring system to assess the needs of the child. This will become more important as the school develops as it is likely more parents will want to apply to have their children go to the school. There will be a fine balance between assisting the most vulnerable within the community, and being fair to all. This process needs to be open and transparent, to avoid generating resentment within the community. Ultimately we hope the school will have courses and offer various learning opportunities to all local residents, through the library and adult education classes.
