The Ituna Community School  is in the Racecourse community in Kitwe, Zambia, a 'shanty' town area on the edge of the city. The school was set up by local volunteers for orphaned and vulnerable children of the area. There are currently 800 such children on the school role, although some rarely attend as they are either too weak from hunger, or working to support their families. Teaching at Ituna is done by volunteers who are supervised by a government official named Mr Mweemba, who looks after this and two other similar schools.

At the moment classes at the school work in three shifts in order to accommodate all the children with the limited resources available, sharing some of the classrooms with carpenters. This unusual arrangement is to help pay the rent on the rather dilapidated building the school is based in. Despite this, and the limited equipment, the teachers are keen to develop the school and the children keen to learn, knowing a good education gives the best chance of escaping poverty.
